University Overview

Webster University was founded in 1915 by the Sisters of Loretto as Loretto College, a Catholic women's college. The institution was renamed Webster College in 1924. In the 1960s, under the leadership of President Jacqueline Grennan, the college transitioned to a secular institution and began admitting men. Webster College became independent of the Sisters of Loretto in 1967. The institution was a pioneer in adult education and graduate programs, establishing its first graduate program in 1967. Webster began its international expansion in 1978 with a campus in Geneva, Switzerland. The institution became Webster University in 1983 to reflect its comprehensive academic offerings and global presence. Webster has since established campuses in the United Kingdom, Austria, the Netherlands, Thailand, China, and other countries. The university has been recognized for its global focus and commitment to interdisciplinary education. Webster celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2015.
