University of Galway

University of Galway was established in 1845 as Queen's College, Galway, one of three Queen's Colleges in Ireland. The college opened in 1849 with 68 students and 23 professors. In 1880, it became part of the Royal University of Ireland. Following Irish independence, the college was renamed University College, Galway and became a constituent college of the National University of Ireland in 1908. The 20th century brought significant expansion in both facilities and academic programs. In the 1990s, the university established itself as a leader in biomedical research and marine science. The institution was renamed National University of Ireland, Galway in 1997, and subsequently University of Galway in 2022. Notable alumni include writer John McGahern, former Irish President Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, and numerous business and political leaders. Today, the university continues to emphasize research excellence, particularly in areas related to its west coast location such as marine science and biomedical engineering.
