University Overview

Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology was established on May 1, 2016, through the merger of Bay of Plenty Polytechnic (founded in 1980s) and Waiariki Institute of Technology (founded in 1978). The merger created a single, comprehensive institute serving the entire Bay of Plenty and Lakes regions. The name "Toi Ohomai" was gifted by local iwi and represents the enduring cultural heritage of the area. The institute has built strong relationships with local iwi and industry partners. In 2020, Toi Ohomai became a subsidiary of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, as part of the national reform of vocational education. The institute continues to focus on regional development and providing accessible, high-quality education.
