University Overview

Massey University was established in 1927 as Massey Agricultural College, named after former Prime Minister William Ferguson Massey. It was originally affiliated with the University of New Zealand. In 1964, following the dissolution of the University of New Zealand, Massey became an independent university. The university expanded significantly in the 1960s and 1970s, adding faculties in business, humanities, and social sciences. Massey pioneered distance education in New Zealand through its extramural program. In the 1990s, Massey merged with Wellington Polytechnic and established its Wellington campus, home to the renowned College of Creative Arts. The university opened its Albany campus in Auckland in 1993, creating a presence in New Zealand's largest city. Massey has produced notable alumni including astronauts, business leaders, and politicians. Today, Massey is recognized for its innovative approach to education and research excellence.
