University Overview

Lincoln University was founded in 1878 as the School of Agriculture, part of Canterbury College (now the University of Canterbury). It was established to provide agricultural education and research for New Zealand's growing farming sector. In 1896, it became Canterbury Agricultural College and moved to its current site in Lincoln. The institution gained independent status in 1961 as Lincoln College, and became Lincoln University in 1990. Throughout its history, Lincoln has pioneered research in pasture management, soil science, and sustainable agriculture. The university established the first viticulture and oenology program in New Zealand in the 1980s. In the 21st century, Lincoln has expanded into environmental management and global food security research. The university has educated generations of agricultural leaders and has strong research partnerships with industry and government.
