The university's origins trace back to the North East Wales Institute (NEWI), established in 1887 as the Wrexham School of Science and Art. It was granted full university status in 2008, taking the name Glyndŵr University in honour of the Welsh prince Owain Glyndŵr. In 2023, it rebranded to Wrexham University to strengthen its civic identity and connection to the city, which gained global attention through its association with Wrexham AFC.
