University Overview

Founded in 1840 as the Winchester Diocesan Training School for schoolmasters, its original purpose was to train teachers for the Church of England's schools. It evolved through various forms, including King Alfred's College (1928), and became University College Winchester in 2000. It was granted full university status in 2005 as the University of Winchester. While it has moved away from its Church of England governance, its heritage continues to influence its ethos of service and community. The campus has expanded significantly with modern facilities since the 2000s.
