University Overview

Founded in 1838 as the Royal Polytechnic Institution, it was Britain's first polytechnic, established to demonstrate new technologies and inventions to the public. It evolved into the Polytechnic of Central London (PCL) in 1970. It was granted university status in 1992 under the UK's Further and Higher Education Act, becoming the University of Westminster. It has a pioneering history, including opening the UK's first public photographic portrait studio and being an early provider of television engineering courses. Its mission has consistently been to provide professional education accessible to all.
