University Overview

Its origins date back to 1827 as the Wolverhampton Mechanics' Institute, established to provide technical education for local industry. It evolved through various forms, becoming the Polytechnic, Wolverhampton in 1969. It was granted university status in 1992 under the UK's Further and Higher Education Act. A major campus redevelopment in Wolverhampton city centre took place in the 2000s. The university has a long-standing mission to provide accessible higher education and has played a key role in the social and economic development of the Black Country region.
