University Overview

Its origins trace back to 1595 with the founding of the Merchant Venturers' Navigation School, which later became the Bristol College of Science and Technology. It evolved into Bristol Polytechnic in 1970. It was granted university status in 1992 under the UK's Further and Higher Education Act, becoming the University of the West of England, Bristol. A major expansion created its modern Frenchay Campus. In 2017, it rebranded to UWE Bristol. Its history is rooted in providing technical and professional education for the South West region.
