University Overview

Founded in 1963, York was part of the 1960s "plate glass university" expansion. It admitted its first students in 1963 and received its Royal Charter in the same year. The campus was designed around a lake and collegiate system from the outset. It quickly gained a reputation for academic excellence and innovative teaching structures. A significant expansion was the development of the Heslington East campus in the 2000s. The university has grown to include a medical school (Hull York Medical School, established 2003) and consistently ranks among the UK's top universities.
