University Overview

Founded in 1927 as University College Hull with a donation from local philanthropist Thomas Ferens, it became a founding college of the University of London. It received its Royal Charter as an independent university in 1954, making it the 14th oldest university in England. A pivotal moment was the 1960 relocation to its current, larger suburban campus. It has a history of progressive firsts, including establishing one of the UK's first departments of Social Work and creating the unique Hull York Medical School (HYMS) in 2003 as a joint venture with the University of York.
