University Overview
The university was formed in 1984 by the merger of two historic institutions: the New University of Ulster (founded 1968 in Coleraine) and the Ulster Polytechnic (founded 1971 in Jordanstown). It inherited the Royal Charter of its predecessor. A major expansion was the 2018 opening of its £350 million Belfast city centre campus, a flagship project for the city. The university has a long tradition of providing accessible, practice-based higher education and has grown into a major driver of innovation and skills in Northern Ireland.
