University Overview

Founded in 1961 and granted its Royal Charter in 1961, Sussex was the first of the UK's 1960s "plate glass universities" to be established. It was deliberately created as an experiment in new forms of teaching and interdisciplinary study, organised around schools of study rather than traditional departments. It quickly gained a reputation for radical thought and academic excellence. The university is a pioneer in development studies, hosting the Institute of Development Studies (IDS). It counts several Nobel Prize winners among its alumni and faculty.
