University Overview

Its origins date back to 1901 as the Sunderland Technical College, established to serve the training needs of the city's shipbuilding and mining industries. It became Sunderland Polytechnic in 1969 and was granted university status in 1992 under the UK's Further and Higher Education Act. A landmark development was the 1996 opening of its purpose-built Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's on the River Wear, a major regeneration project. It has expanded its global footprint with international campuses, reflecting its outward-looking, modern identity.
