University Overview

The university was created in 2013 from the merger of the University of Glamorgan (founded 1913 as the South Wales and Monmouthshire School of Mines) and the University of Wales, Newport (whose origins date back to 1841). This merger created one of the largest universities in Wales. The University of Glamorgan had gained university status in 1992, while Newport was a former polytechnic. The history of USW is deeply connected to the industrial heritage and educational needs of the South Wales valleys and coastal cities.
