University Overview

Founded in 1862 as the Hartley Institution, it became University College, Southampton in 1902. It received its Royal Charter as the University of Southampton in 1952. A pioneer in new fields of study, it established the first UK university departments of Aeronautics and Astronautics and of Music. The university has a distinguished record of innovation, including pivotal contributions to the development of the modern internet (through the work of Sir Tim Berners-Lee) and fibre optics. It has been awarded multiple Queen's Anniversary Prizes for higher education.
