University of Sheffield

Founded in 1905 by the merger of University College of Sheffield (founded 1897) and Sheffield Medical School (founded 1828), it received its Royal Charter in 1905. It is one of the original "red brick" civic universities. The university has a distinguished history of innovation, with six Nobel Prize winners among its alumni and staff. Breakthroughs include the development of penicillin as a drug, the discovery of the vitamins folic acid and C, and pioneering work in sound reproduction and air conditioning. It was awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize multiple times for research in fields such as dentistry and oncology.
