University Overview

Its origins trace back to 1850 with the founding of the Pendleton Mechanics' Institute. It became the Royal Technical Institute, Salford in 1896, receiving its royal prefix from Queen Victoria. It gained university status in 1967 following a Royal Charter as the University of Salford. A landmark development was the opening of its campus at MediaCityUK in 2011, placing it at the centre of the UK's media industry. Its history is rooted in providing technical education for the industrial North West, evolving to meet the needs of the modern digital economy.
