University Overview

Founded in 1879 by Victorian entrepreneur and philanthropist Thomas Holloway as a pioneering women's college, it was opened by Queen Victoria in 1886. It merged with Bedford College (another historic women's college founded in 1849) in 1985 to form Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, though it is commonly known as Royal Holloway. It became a member of the University of London in 1900. The university has been fully co-educational since 1965. Its history is defined by a commitment to excellence in education and research within a spectacular architectural setting.
