University Overview

The university was formed in 1989 from the merger of four historic institutions: Queen Mary College (founded 1887), Westfield College (founded 1882), St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College (founded 1123), and the London Hospital Medical College (founded 1785). This merger combined a civic university tradition with two of the oldest medical schools in the UK. It fully integrated into the University of London in 1915 and retains its own degree-awarding powers. Its history is a blend of pioneering education for women (Westfield) and deep-rooted medical excellence.
