University Overview

Its origins date back to 1862 with the founding of the Plymouth School of Navigation. It evolved through various mergers to become Plymouth Polytechnic in 1970. It was granted university status in 1992, initially as the University of Plymouth, following the UK's Further and Higher Education Act. A key moment was the 2004 merger with the Exeter-based University College of St Mark & St John (Marjons), expanding its education portfolio. It has a distinguished history in marine research, housing renowned institutions like the Marine Institute and the Plymouth Marine Laboratory.
