University Overview

Founded in 1969 as Newcastle Polytechnic, formed from the merger of three regional colleges: Rutherford College of Technology, the College of Art & Industrial Design, and the Municipal College of Commerce. It was granted university status in 1992 under the UK's Further and Higher Education Act, becoming the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. It simplified its name to Northumbria University in 2002. A £200+ million campus redevelopment in the 21st century transformed its facilities. It has risen rapidly in research power rankings and was awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize for its work in advanced materials.
