University Overview

Its origins date back to 1834 with the founding of the School of Medicine and Surgery. It became part of the federal University of Durham in 1852 as the College of Physical Sciences. It was granted an independent Royal Charter as the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1963, following a split from Durham University. A pioneering institution, it established the first university departments of computing science and agricultural engineering in the UK. It was awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize for its research into ageing and health.
