University Overview

Its origins date back to 1824 as the Manchester Mechanics' Institute. It later became Manchester Polytechnic in 1970, one of the largest polytechnics in the UK. It was granted university status in 1992 under the Further and Higher Education Act, becoming Manchester Metropolitan University. A major expansion and redevelopment of its city centre campus began in the 2000s, including significant investment in facilities like the Business School and the School of Digital Arts. In 2017, it merged with the Cheshire campus of the University of Chester, further expanding its footprint.
