University Overview

Founded in 1881 as University College Liverpool, it became a founding college of the federal Victoria University in 1884. It received its Royal Charter as the independent University of Liverpool in 1903, making it one of the original six "red brick" civic universities. It has a distinguished history of innovation, including the establishment of the world's first departments in oceanography, civic design, and biochemistry. It boasts nine Nobel Prize winners among its alumni and staff, with breakthroughs including the development of modern pharmacology and the first successful randomized controlled trial.
