University Overview

Its origins date back to 1823 with the founding of the Liverpool Mechanics' Institute, later becoming the Liverpool Polytechnic in 1970. It was granted university status in 1992 under the UK's Further and Higher Education Act and was named in honour of Sir John Moores, a local businessman and philanthropist who was a major benefactor. A landmark development was the opening of its purpose-built, city-centre campus in the 2000s, including the award-winning Tom Reilly Building and the Liverpool School of Art and Design.
