University Overview

Its origins trace back to 1841 as the Young Men's Mental Improvement Society, which evolved into the Huddersfield Science and Mechanics' Institute. It became a technical college and later Huddersfield Polytechnic in 1970. It was granted university status in 1992 as the University of Huddersfield. A landmark moment was the 1998 acquisition and refurbishment of the historic Queensgate Mills as part of its expanding campus. The university has built a reputation on its roots in providing accessible, vocational higher education to the local community.
