University Overview

Its origins date back to 1948 as a technical college for the local aviation industry, closely linked to the de Havilland Aircraft Company. It became Hatfield Polytechnic in 1969, and was granted university status in 1992 under the UK's Further and Higher Education Act, becoming the University of Hertfordshire. A major £450 million investment from the 1990s onward transformed its campus into a modern, purpose-built learning environment. Its history is rooted in responding directly to the technological and skills needs of the regional economy.
