University Overview

Founded in 1821 as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, it is the world's first mechanics' institute, established to provide technical education for working men. It was granted university status by Royal Charter in 1966, taking the name Heriot-Watt University after Scottish inventor James Watt and philanthropist George Heriot. A pioneer in international education, it opened its Dubai campus in 2005 (the first UK university in the UAE) and its Malaysia campus in 2014. Its history is defined by a consistent mission of providing education relevant to the needs of industry and the economy.
