University Overview

Its origins date back to 1843 as the Sheffield School of Design. It evolved through various forms, becoming Sheffield City Polytechnic in 1969. It was granted university status in 1992 under the UK's Further and Higher Education Act, adopting the name Sheffield Hallam University (Hallam refers to the south-west region of Yorkshire). A major £220+ million campus transformation in the 21st century created its modern, city-centre facilities, including the iconic Heart of the Campus and the advanced Engineering building. Its history is rooted in providing accessible, vocational education to the city's workforce.
