University Overview

Its origins date back to 1890 as the Woolwich Polytechnic, the second-oldest polytechnic in the UK. It became Thames Polytechnic in 1970 following mergers with other colleges. In 1992, it was granted university status and renamed the University of Greenwich. A landmark moment was its move into the magnificent Old Royal Naval College buildings in Greenwich in the 1990s. The university has grown through further mergers, including with the Natural Resources Institute in 1996 and Avery Hill College of Education, solidifying its diverse portfolio.
