University Overview

Founded in 1451 by papal bull from Pope Nicholas V, at the request of King James II, making it one of Scotland's four ancient universities. It was originally located in the city's High Street before moving to its current Gilmorehill site in 1870. The university has a distinguished history of academic achievement, with notable alumni including economist Adam Smith, engineer James Watt, and several Nobel laureates. It was a pioneer in providing education to students from diverse backgrounds and was the first UK university to establish a chair of Engineering.
