University Overview

Its origins date back to the mid-19th century with the founding of schools of art and science in Exeter. It was formally established as the University College of the South West of England in 1922. It received its Royal Charter as the University of Exeter in 1955. Key developments include the 2004 merger with the Camborne School of Mines (strengthening its Earth and environmental sciences) and its 2013 entry into the Russell Group. It has grown into a major research-intensive institution while maintaining a strong sense of community.
