University Overview

Founded in 1964, Essex was part of the UK's 1960s "plate glass university" expansion. It received its Royal Charter in 1965, with its first students arriving that year. The university was established with a deliberately modern and interdisciplinary structure, breaking away from traditional faculty models. It gained early recognition for its pioneering departments in Government and Sociology. The 2010s saw significant expansion with the development of Southend Campus and the Knowledge Gateway research and technology park. The university was awarded the Regius Professorship in Political Science in 2017.
