Founded in 1881 as University College, Dundee, it was initially a constituent college of the University of St Andrews, providing scientific and medical education. It became an independent university in 1967 following a Royal Charter. A pivotal development was the 2007 opening of its School of Medicine, building on a long-established reputation in medical research. The university has played a key role in the city's regeneration, notably through its Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design and its contributions to the city's life sciences cluster.
