University Overview

Originally founded in 1946 as the College of Aeronautics at the Royal Air Force base in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, its initial mission was to advance aeronautical engineering in the post-war era. It was granted a Royal Charter in 1969, becoming the Cranfield Institute of Technology. It achieved full university status in 1993, adopting the name Cranfield University. A pivotal expansion was the 1975 merger with the National College of Agricultural Engineering (Silsoe), broadening its remit. It is distinct in the UK for its postgraduate focus and deep integration with industry and government.
