University Overview
The university was formed in 1996 from the merger of two Cardiff-based institutions: the Cardiff Institute of Higher Education and the University of Wales College, Cardiff (UWCC) School of Art and Design. It began operating as a separate institution from the University of Wales in 2004, initially as the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC). It was granted full university status and adopted its current name, Cardiff Metropolitan University, in 2011. Its roots can be traced back to the 19th-century art schools and teacher training colleges of the city.
