University Overview

It was founded in 1839 by influential figures including Prime Ministers William Gladstone and the Earl of Derby, making it one of the oldest higher education institutions in England. It began as the Chester Diocesan Training College, established to train teachers for the region's church schools. It evolved through various forms, becoming Chester College of Higher Education and later University College Chester. It was granted full university status as the University of Chester in 2005. Its foundation makes it the fifth oldest higher education institution in England.
