University Overview

Founded in 1883 as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire, it was one of the founding colleges of the University of Wales in 1893. It operated for over a century as the University of Wales, Cardiff. In 1997 it merged with the University of Wales College of Medicine. It became an independent, degree-awarding institution in 2004, adopting the name Cardiff University in 2005. It has a distinguished history of research, with notable contributions to fields such as MRI technology and sustainable urban planning.
