University Overview

Founded in 1865 as the Oxford School of Art, it later became the Oxford Polytechnic in 1970. It was granted university status in 1992 and named after its first principal, John Henry Brookes, who was instrumental in its development from the 1920s to the 1950s. The university has grown from a single art school into a major institution with multiple campuses, gaining an international reputation, especially for its business school and its unique publishing program. Its history reflects a transition from a local college to a globally connected university.
