University Overview

Founded in 1900 by Queen Victoria, it received its Royal Charter as England's first civic university, designed to be open to students of all backgrounds and religions. It was the first UK university to establish a faculty of commerce, offer degrees in dentistry, and build a students' union building. Its origins trace back to the 1825 Birmingham Medical School and the 1875 Mason Science College. It has been at the forefront of numerous scientific breakthroughs, including the development of the cavity magnetron for radar and early work on plastic heart valves.
