University Overview
The university was formed in 2006 from the merger of two older institutions: the University of Luton (gained university status in 1993) and De Montfort University's Bedford campus. Its roots, however, go back much further to the late 19th century with the founding of teacher training colleges in Bedford. This merger created a larger, more comprehensive post-1992 university dedicated to serving the educational needs of the region.
