University Overview
Its origins date back to 1824 with the founding of the Leeds Mechanics' Institute. It evolved into Leeds Polytechnic in 1970. It gained university status in 1992 as Leeds Metropolitan University. A pivotal moment was the 2009 acquisition and redevelopment of the former BBC Leeds building into its state-of-the-art city centre campus. The university was renamed Leeds Beckett University in 2014 in honour of Dr. Ernest Beckett, a prominent 19th-century benefactor.
