University Overview

Xavier University was founded in 1831 as the Athenaeum, a men's college established by Bishop Edward Fenwick of the Diocese of Cincinnati. In 1840, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) assumed control of the institution and renamed it St. Xavier College. The college was located in downtown Cincinnati until 1912, when it moved to its current location in the Evanston neighborhood. St. Xavier College became Xavier University in 1930. The university became coeducational in 1969, admitting women to all programs. Xavier has grown significantly, adding graduate programs and professional schools throughout the late 20th century. The university has been recognized for its commitment to service and social justice, reflecting its Jesuit heritage. Notable alumni include politicians, business leaders, educators, and professional athletes. Xavier celebrated its 190th anniversary in 2021 and continues to expand its programs and facilities.
