University of Waikato

The University of Waikato was established in 1964 as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand. Following the dissolution of the University of New Zealand, Waikato became an independent university in 1964. The university opened its Hamilton campus on land gifted by the city. In the 1970s and 1980s, Waikato developed distinctive strengths in management and Māori studies. The university established the first School of Māori and Pacific Development in New Zealand. In the 1990s, Waikato expanded its programs in science and engineering. The Tauranga campus was established in the early 2000s to serve the growing Bay of Plenty region. Waikato has produced notable alumni including politicians, business leaders, and academics. The university continues to innovate with new programs and research centers focused on regional and global challenges.
