University of Massachusetts Amherst

UMass Amherst was founded on April 29, 1863, as the Massachusetts Agricultural College under the provisions of the federal Morrill Land-Grant College Act . The institution was established to provide instruction to Massachusetts citizens in "agricultural, mechanical, and military arts" . It opened in 1867 on 310 rural acres with four faculty members, four wooden buildings, and 56 students . William S. Clark, appointed as the college's third president in 1867, is considered the principal founder, coordinating the completion of construction and welcoming the first class .

The first female student was admitted on a part-time basis in 1875, with the first full-time female student admitted in 1892 . Graduate degrees were authorized in 1892, and by 1931, reflecting a broader curriculum, the institution was renamed Massachusetts State College . In 1947, "Mass State" became the University of Massachusetts .

After World War II, the university experienced rapid growth, with enrollment reaching 4,000 by 1954 and jumping to 10,500 by 1964 as Baby Boomers came of age . The 1970s brought significant architectural additions including the Murray D. Lincoln Campus Center, the W.E.B. Du Bois Library (the tallest academic library in the United States), and the Fine Arts Center . The 1970s and 1980s saw UMass Amherst emerge as a major research facility with the construction of the Lederle Graduate Research Center and the Conte National Polymer Research Center .

In 2003, the Massachusetts State Legislature designated UMass Amherst as a research university and the "flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system" . The university was named a top producer of Fulbright Award winners in 2008-2009 . In 2012, Kumble R. Subbaswamy became chancellor, leading the institution through significant growth in national rankings . Javier Reyes became chancellor in 2024, the first person of Hispanic descent to serve in this role .
