University Overview

University of California, Irvine was established in 1965 as one of three new UC campuses created in the 1960s. The Irvine Company donated 1,000 acres of the Irvine Ranch for the campus, which was designed by architect William Pereira. The campus opened with 1,589 students and 119 faculty members. UCI grew rapidly, adding schools and programs throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1996, UCI became a member of the Association of American Universities, a remarkable achievement for a university only 30 years old. The Claire Trevor School of the Arts, The Paul Merage School of Business, and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering have become nationally recognized. UCI has been home to Nobel laureates, including Frank Sherwood Rowland in chemistry (1995) and Irwin Rose in chemistry (2004). The university has consistently ranked as a top university for social mobility and diversity. UCI celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015 and continues to expand its research and educational programs.
