University at Albany

University at Albany was founded in 1844 as the New York State Normal School, the first state-chartered institution for teacher education in New York. The school was originally located in downtown Albany. In 1890, it became the New York State Normal College and began offering bachelor's degrees. The institution became the New York State College for Teachers in 1914. In 1962, it joined the State University of New York system as the University at Albany, SUNY. The university moved to its current uptown campus in the 1960s and 1970s, with buildings designed by renowned architect Edward Durell Stone. UAlbany has grown into a comprehensive research university with strong programs in criminal justice, public policy, business, and the sciences. The university has been recognized for its contributions to atmospheric science, nanotechnology, and social science research. Notable alumni include Pulitzer Prize winners, business leaders, and government officials.
