University Overview

Texas State University was founded in 1899 as Southwest Texas State Normal School, established by the Texas Legislature to train teachers for the growing state. The school opened in 1903 with 303 students and 17 faculty members. In 1918, the institution became Southwest Texas State Normal College and began offering four-year degrees. It became Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1923, Southwest Texas State College in 1959, and Southwest Texas State University in 1969. The university was renamed Texas State University in 2003 to reflect its comprehensive mission and growing reputation. The Round Rock campus opened in 1996 to serve students in the Austin metropolitan area. Notable alumni include President Lyndon B. Johnson, who graduated in 1930 and later taught at the university. Texas State has experienced significant growth in the 21st century, adding doctoral programs, research centers, and facilities.
